Michaela Polleres defeats Hilde Jager for gold in Warsaw

Number one seed Michaela Polleres captured her first European Open victory in her career. In Warsaw the Austrian judoka won her category U70kg after she bested Dutch Hilde Jager. In the second minute of the match Polleres took the lead after she took over Jager but a few seconds later she turned Jager into a second wazari for the victory. Polleres who won silver at the European U23 Championships where she lost to Jager in the final.

Polleres won bronze last year at the Grand Prix of Zagreb and knows Jager well, it was their fifth match at major events, but this time the gold was for Austria. Poland won bronze as Daria Pogorzelec won her last contest as well as Gabriella Willems of Belgium who took bronze.

Maike Ziech celebrated gold U78kg. The German judoka who suffered many injuries booked her second victory at a European Open. In 2015 she won in Minsk. The former European Junior and U23 Champion was able to beat Paula Kulaga in the final by an efficient strangle. Stessie Bastareaud of France and Sophie Berger of Belgium took the bronze medals.

Ukrianian heavyweight Anastasiia Sapsai won the final against Mercedesz Szigetvari (HUN) after a right barai en converted her throw into oseikomi. Sapsai won her three matches and became the best of 14 judoka. Sonia Asselah (ALG) and Elisa Marchio of Italy both took bronze. For Sapsai it was her first European Open victory. On Sunday only 41 women were active in Warsaw so the day was over soon.

No gold on Sunday for Poland, but the with seven medals Poland won the medal table. 2016 remains the best year with three gold medals.
